General[edit | edit source]

What is DayZ Standalone?[edit | edit source]

What has become known as simply DayZ, this game is the continuation of creator Dean Hall's vision for his popular Arma 2 add-on now referred to as the DayZ Mod. Taken from the game's official description on the Steam Store:

What is the difference between the DayZ Mod and DayZ Standalone?[edit | edit source]

DayZ Standalone, as its name implies, is a wholly separate game built on its own foundations that are no longer reliant on the ArmA II bones which made the DayZ Mod possible. It is being developed alongside the creation of a new in-house game engine at Bohemia referred to as Enfusion. It also includes an extensively reworked Chernarus map.

Is it worth buying DayZ?[edit | edit source]

DayZ is an incredible experience, however, if you require a fully polished title and are not prepared to deal with the consequences of playing a game that is still undergoing heavy and complicated changes, then DayZ may not be right for you. Development of the game is still ongoing despite an official release labeled 1.0. Bugs and issues are still common, and many previously planned or introduced features are still due to be implemented in the Enfusion engine. Despite this, the game is one-of-a-kind, and you will struggle to find a gaming experience that does large-scale multiplayer zombie survival like DayZ.

How will I get this game and on what platform(s)?[edit | edit source]

DayZ Standalone is intended to be a multi-platform title. Currently, the game is available for Windows PC (via digital distribution on Steam), the Xbox One Marketplace, and the PlayStation Store.

What are the system requirements for DayZ Standalone?[edit | edit source]

The necessary hardware and software for the Windows PC version of DayZ are listed below, as found on the Steam Store page.

When is the next update and what will be in it?[edit | edit source]

Updates to the Stable branch occur when a major revision to the game has met the quality and playability standards necessary for mass consumption. Prior to release on that branch, updates will first be tested for a length of time on the Experimental branch to prevent any critical issues from affecting gameplay for the majority of users. There are not fixed intervals for the release of updates on either branch; instead, as soon as an update is ready it is made available to the public. For more information about what is contained in past updates, visit the Changelog page.

Updates to the Experimental branch are more frequent, and typically consist of small changes from build-to-build. These updates occur usually several times a week, and are usually focused on fixing specific issues with each release rather than introducing new content. For more information about the two branches, see the Experimental page.

DayZ isn't working for me! How do I fix it?[edit | edit source]

First, search the official forums and the DayZ Subreddit. Many issues are already known, and some have temporary or known fixes provided by the developer or other users. Also check the Feedback Tracker -- if your particular issue has not already been submitted, please add it there. Simply verifying the integrity of your cache in Steam will fix some issues, but for additional help you will want to seek out one of the aforementioned outlets.

I found a bug! What do I do?[edit | edit source]

Report it on the official Feedback Tracker. Make sure to read the how-to guide first. You can also post your issue on the official DayZ forums. In either case, be detailed and give as much information as possible and, if you are able, provide screenshots and/or video.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

What is the difference between 1st Person and 1st/3rd Person servers?[edit | edit source]

1st Person, as its name implies, is restricted to the use of the first person perspective only. Servers labeled 1st/3rd Person have enabled the ability to use either the first person or third person camera perspectives. There is no third person only option for server configurations. For more information about their differences, visit the Servers page.

How do I change my in-game name?[edit | edit source]

Your default name will be the name you use for your computer (i.e. 'Christopher'). On the main menu screen, hover your mouse over the name box in the customize menu found through the title menu; this will enable you to type in that box and set the name to whatever you wish.

What's the difference between Stable and Experimental?[edit | edit source]

A current guide on installing and setting up a DayZ Standalone server by using SteamCMD, this guide also includes a server start batch file and a solution to download and auto-update mods.

This guide is made using Windows Server 2019 on Vultr with SteamCMD. This guide will also work on Windows 10, 8.1, Server 2016 and Server 2012 r2. You may need to install additional runtimes depending on your OS.

SteamCMD

Download SteamCMD here and move it into a folder in the C drive called SteamCMD.

Numbers

Run steamcmd.exe and SteamCMD will unpack into the folder

At the C drive create installserver.bat and fill it with:

Upon running this file it will install the DayZ server files into C:serversdayzserver.

Opening ports

For your server to be found in the DayZ launcher and other server browsers you will need to open certain ports. To do this open up Windows Defender firewall with Advanced security.

This is for a server running on port 2302

Ports that need to be opened for UDP are:

Inbound rules:

  • 2302-2306
  • 4380
  • 27000-27031
  • 27036

Outbound rules:

  • 2302-2306
  • 2344

Ports that need to be opened for TCP are:

Inbound rules:

  • 2302
  • 2312
  • 27015-27030
  • 27036-27037

Outbound rules:

  • 2312
  • 2344
  • 2345

Server start batch file

The basic batch file to start the server is this:

You can find more complex starters that include BEC and restarting here.

If your DayZ server starts, shows up in the server browser/DZSA launcher and you can connect & play; now you can begin to install mods and implement a restart system.

Adding your server to DZSA Launcher is done by going here and inputting your server IP address plus the query port which is 27016.

Launch errors

Some common errors upon starting the server are:

VCRuntime140.dll is missing

To fix go here and install the x64 bit.

Steam
XAPOFX1_5.dll and/or X3DAudio1_7.dll are missing

Install the runtime from here, note it takes a couple of minutes to install.

Configuration information

C:serversdayzserverserverDZ.cfg has your server settings and options, importantly the server name, password options and mission file name.

C:serversdayzserverPROFILENAME change from PROFILENAME in the start batch file, this is where your logs will be generated and where you put configuration files from mods when they state your server profile folder.

Installing mods

Key

You need to get the mods workshop id and its @name, you can find its id by the number that is at the end of the workshop URL.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2106663048

The id is 2106663048.

Create installmod.bat in the C drive

Run this to download the mod, move the mod file into your server’s directory, rename it and copy the key.

Auto mod updates

DayZ Workshop mods can become annoyances when updates are pushed as players will have it updated immediately via the Steam client whilst the server will not.

Auto-updating mods can be handled through the DZSA server launcher, get it here.

Dayz Steam Key

Using this means you need to include it in your start batch file and reference the DayZ server executable (.exe):

Server restarts

To implement a server restart system, create a batch file in the C drive called restartdayz.bat

Fill it with:

This kills the DayZ server 64-bit process.

Server restarts are going to be run through Windows task scheduler. This is super simple to setup, On the right choose create task:

Now make Daily triggers at certain times with the action being to run the C:restartdayz.bat file.

Here you can see that the server will be stopped every 6 hours.

Getting restart count down messages in the game chat for the restart time can be done in db/messages.xml which is found in your mission file at C:serversdayzservermpmissionsMISSIONNAME.
